Black Sabbath, Never Say Die

£60.00

Tapping into some of the bondage imagery favoured by UK punks in the late 70s, Hipgnosis’ second album cover for Black Sabbath, Never Say Die!, was typically arresting. Designer Storm Thorgerson based his fighter-pilot uniforms on a mix of “the paraphernalia that high-altitude flyers have to wear” and “leather, sensory-deprivation bondage hoods and gimp suits”, while, in the original photo, the models stood before a USAF Chipmunk, which was later altered to illustrate Hipgnosis’ own fictional pre-World War II model. Never Say Die! was the final release from Black Sabbath’s classic line-up, as Ozzy Osbourne’s increasingly erratic behaviour led to his departure from the band in 1979.
