Lady Gaga, Artpop

£60.00

Lady Gaga has long sought to merge highbrow art with lowbrow pop culture, so it’s fitting that the cover for her third album, ARTPOP, was designed by Jeff Koons, a US artist famed for creating oversized sculptures out of everyday objects. His design reimagines a naked Lady Gaga as Venus, goddess of fertility (snippets of Italian Renaissance painter Botticelli’s The Birth Of Venus can be seen behind the Gaga statue), with one of Koons’ own Gazing Balls between her legs. The background collage also features parts of 16th-century Italian sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s statue Apollo And Daphne, which depicts the god of music in pursuit of the daughter of the river god Peneus.
