Pantera, Vulgar Display Of Power

£60.00

Having defined their sound on 1990’s Cowboys From Hell, Pantera refined it with Vulgar Display Of Power, their masterpiece and the defining groove metal album. Its unapologetically descriptive title needed a suitably potent cover, and the extreme close-up of a man being punched in the face remains one of metal’s most iconic artworks. Drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott started the rumour that the person being hit was a fan who’d agreed to be paid $10 a punch until they got the right image – on the 30th try. In reality, photographer Brad Guice, who’d taken the photo for the Cowboys From Hell cover, hired models and captured perfection thanks to a carefully staged set-up that included the use of strobe lighting, an electric fan to blow the model’s hair about, and manipulation of his camera’s shutter speed. The man receiving the punch was Sean Cross, who would go on to be best man at Guice’s wedding.
