Helmed by legendary hip-hop/metal producer Rick Rubin, Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) saw Slipknot incorporate new elements into their sound, including the prominent use of acoustic guitars and more traditional song structures. To illustrate this development, percussionist Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan devised a new disguise for the group: the stitched-leather Maggot Mask. Appearing both in the promo video for the single Vermillion, and on the album cover, the Maggot Mask was in part a recognition of the nickname Crahan had given the band’s fanbase. It remains one of the most popular pieces of Slipknot merchandise.
