Athena has been an iconic art publisher and retailer for over 50 years.
In 1964 Ole Christensen opened our first shop and Athena soon became known for its high-quality reproductions of works of art. By 1979 Athena had over 20 stores covering the UK, with a publishing division selling to fifty countries. Athena became the largest company of its kind in the world. At its peak Athena had over 150 stores.
Our distinctive range of posters from the 1970s and 80s included ‘Tennis Girl’ and ‘L’Enfant’, by Spencer Rowell.
Changing technologies and the rise of the internet era dramatically transformed the commercial art market. So in 2014 Athena moved fully online, supplying our full range of framed images directly to customers, from our workshops in Yorkshire.
Our collections of curated prints, selected from emerging and established artists, are now also available in galleries and shops across the UK.
Today our art ranges contain exceptional and contemporary images for every home. With an individual edge you won’t find elsewhere, our prints are the perfect finishing touch to your interior designs.
Our aim, as ever, is to make great art affordable.
Most of all we value quality. Made from FSC certified materials, our products are all made with premium components. As a result our workshop team handmade all of our products with machine assistance to ensure lasting quality, and your lasting enjoyment.
We’re based just outside of then historic city of York, our offices and production workshop all on the same site for fast communication and great customer service.
